Program Rules
General Scope - Every athlete has the opportunity to compete as long as they work hard and are dedicated to the program. We do not cut anyone from the team. There are eighteen different events in track & field and each athlete can compete in no more than four (including relays) at a qualifying meet.
Practice/Travel Requirements - Each athlete must have a physical on file at SHS before they can practice. They must sign a code of conduct form and have completed 9 days of practice before they can compete. They must meet all school district and state eligibility requirements and I require that they be at practice the day before a meet or they will not be allowed to compete in that meet unless the absence has been excused and prearranged with me.
Practices - Practice is normally held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm depending on where each event coach is that day. We use many different locations around the community.
Practice Gear - The athletes need to have a good pair of training shoes, comfortable shorts (no zippers or boxers), t-shirt, no cut off sleeves or torn t-shirts), sweats (top & bottom), a light pair of gloves, a hat or headband and a swimsuit. We will practice outside as much as possible and it is very important to keep muscles warm on cold days.
Equipment - Our equipment is very expensive and our budget does not allow for replacement of lost or stolen items every year. The equipment checked out to each athlete is his or her responsibility and must be paid for if lost, stolen, or damaged in any way. If equipment is not turned in or paid for by the end of the season then the athlete will not letter and she will be put on the fine list until the equipment is turned in or paid for.
Travel - The team will travel every weekend (weather permitting). An itinerary and the meet information will be posted and handed out each week. Boys/Girls will have access to a phone when we return and someone will need to be available to pick the athletes up. A coach will remain at the school until all athletes have gone home.
Ride home with parents - The only people I can release an athlete to are the athlete's own parents or guardian. If an athlete needs to ride home with their parent(s), I will need a signed form and will need to personally speak with the parent(s) before leaving the meet. I cannot, nor will I let any athlete ride home with anyone else. Please do not ask, legally I cannot let you. If an athlete needs to ride home with their parents or with someone other than their own parent, this must be arranged (papers signed) prior to departure with Mr. Garnhart or other administrator.
Attendance Policy - All practices must be attended. There are exceptions such as illness and doctor appointments. All missed practices will need to be excused by a note from your parent, teacher, or doctor. You will also need to notify me (Coach Kelting) about your absence as well as your event coach. An unexcused absence will result in loss of participation from the next meet. Three unexcused absences result in termination for that sport season.
Meet Schedule - Please let me know ahead of time if you cannot attend a meet. Again, a note from home works well. We expect everyone to attend meets. We ask that all athletes stay to support their fellow teammates until the conclusion of the meet. Remember, we are trying to foster a team environment and that won’t happen unless the entire team stays to support those teammates who compete in the last events.
Missing the Bus - If you miss the bus, it will be counted as an unexcused absence. If you or your parents choose to drive you to the meet, you will still NOT be allowed to compete.
Injuries - If you are injured, you must inform Coach Kelting and keep him updated on the status of your injury. You must be responsible enough to get to the training room daily to care for your injury. Remember, if you go to a doctor, you cannot practice until that doctor releases you. If you think you need to see a doctor, coordinate with Joanne.
Code of Conduct/Competition Suspensions - An athlete may be suspended from track competition and/or removed from the team for any of the following reasons: being dishonest with parents, coaches, or trainers regarding any track issues; breaking the code of conduct; rule infractions, insubordination; acts of hazing; sexual harassment issues; or any other actions deemed inappropriate by the coaching staff. If an athlete is coded during the track season, that athlete will serve the requirements as outlined in the SCSD#2 Parent Consent Form and will also not be allowed to letter and will lose their status as a captain if applicable. If an athlete was coded during a previous season and is using track to clear that code, they must abide by all the rules and policies of this team, and must finish the season in good standing in order for the code violation to be cleared. In order to letter, the athlete must meet the requirements of the lettering policy and must finish the season in good standing. 1st Offense - Suspended from 25% of competitions. 2nd Offense - suspended from 50% of competitions. Practice with consent of the coach. 3rd Offense - Suspended from all extra-curricular activities for the remainder of high school career.
Diet and Rest - This program asks a lot of our athletes every day. This causes fatigue and breaks the body down. It is extremely important that the athlete does her/his part to eat a well-balanced diet, to drink plenty of water, and to get the proper amount of rest and recovery. If they don’t, it will reflect in their performance. I am amazed at how many of our athletes do not eat breakfast or lunch. A quick, healthy snack will help regenerate the body. A snack that contains carbs and protein are best (for ex. chocolate milk, granola bars, peanut butter and honey, jerky).
Other Activities/Commitments - Although highly discouraged, sometimes athletes choose to participate in other activities in addition to track. If this is the case, please speak with Coach Kelting about your particular situation.
Dedication/Commitment: Please do not come out for this sport if you are truly not 100% dedicated and committed to it, because you will just be wasting your time, your teammate’s time and the coach’s time. If you are coming out because your friend talked you into it, or because you want to socialize, and you don’t plan to work hard at it, I can assure you that you will be sorely disappointed and will get more than you bargained for. Track is a tough sport and it requires a lot of hard work and is not something you should enter into lightly. If you are not sure and are just trying it for the first time, and have the attitude that you will work hard and give it your best shot, then the staff welcomes you and looks forward to getting to know you and seeing how successful you can be in this program.
Be a good teammate, be a good person: One of the top requirements of this team is that the boys/girls be good teammates and good people. This sport is very important to many of the young athletes that participate in it and as a head coach of this program, I will never allow one or two kids to ruin the experience for 40 or 50 other teammates. Again, if someone has joined this team for the wrong reasons, it will become very evident, very quickly and the issues will be addressed immediately.
Food: Athletes are responsible for their own healthy lunch when we are traveling and returning home the same day. We will always feed them dinner after the meet. When we are traveling and staying the night, depending on the leave time, we will feed the athletes lunch (possibly) if we leave in the morning, dinner that night, and breakfast, lunch and dinner the next day as deemed necessary based on return times. They always need to bring healthy snacks and drinks. There is usually a concession stand at most of the meets, but the athletes should not be eating lunch at the concession stand, as the food is not healthy. They can bring money to buy snacks and drinks if they need to.
Dress Up: Athletes are asked to dress up the day before meets. Athletes please make sure to wear business attire clothing that helps you look professional.
Regional Qualifying Standards
Athletes must be in the top 4 for their team in a specific event.. They must also be in good academic and team standing to qualify,
State Qualifying Standards
If athletes make a pre-qualifying standard they automatically have the chance to compete at the State Meet. If an athlete does not pre-qualify they must be in the top 4 for their team. Top 4 will be based off of marks, practices, and coaches discretion.
Lettering
Athletes must score 10 varsity points during the season or place in the top 8 at the 4A East Regional Championships to fulfill the scoring requirements. Athletes must also sell both of their booster club calendars to get their lettering points. Each booster club calendar will be worth 2 varsity letter points.
